(Article from The Chronicle of Higher Education - September 2, 2025)

"Every new article or study seems to contain the same warning for higher education: Artificial intelligence is everywhere. It’s in the discussion posts your students turn in minutes before they’re due, the weekly problem sets, the take-home midterm. It’s even in your learning-management system.

As a result, for many courses these days, AI is also in the syllabus."

"Google is rolling out a new AI-powered experimental feature in Google Translate designed to help people practice and learn a new language, the company announced on Tuesday. Translate is also gaining new live capabilities to make it easier to communicate in real time with a person speaking a different language.

The new language practice feature is designed for both beginners starting to learn conversational skills and advanced speakers looking to brush up on their vocabulary, the company says. To do so, it creates tailored listening and speaking practice sessions that adapt to a user’s skill level and unique learning goals."

(Quote from Book Introduction)

“With the rapid development of generative AI, teachers are experiencing a new pedagogical challenge, one that promises to forever change the way we approach teaching and learning. As a response to this unprecedented teaching context, this collection—Teaching and Generative AI: Pedagogical Possibilities and Productive Tensions—provides interdisciplinary teachers, librarians, and instructional designers with practical and thoughtful pedagogical resources for navigating the possibilities and challenges of teaching in an AI era. Because our goal with this edited collection is to present nuanced discussions of AI technologies across disciplines, the chapters collectively acknowledge or explore both possibilities and tensions—including the strengths, limitations, ethical considerations, and disciplinary potential and challenges—of teaching in an AI era. As such, the authors in this collection do not simply praise or criticize AI, but thoughtfully acknowledge and explore its complexities within educational settings."

While the leap from GPT 4 to GPT 5 may not be as dramatic as the jump from GPT 3, the improvements on the horizon could make AI feel less like a tool and more like a true assistant."
